And the water pump is the center of the cooling system. When it is leaking or starts making noises during operation, it needs to be replaced to keep the engine cool and smoothly running. Replacing the water pump is not difficult, and you can save yourself a lot of time and money by doing this task yourself. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Drain pan Metric wrench set Metric socket set Metal scraper Rags New water pump and gasket Gasket sealant Funnel Step by Step : 1 Turn off the engine and wait until it is cooled off completely. Disconnect the battery. 2 Position the drain pan under the radiator drain on the bottom of the Ford Ranger 2002 radiator. 3 Open the radiator drain, making sure the drain pan catches the liquid. Open the radiator cap on the top of the radiator. Wait until the radiator is drained completely. 4 Unscrew the bolts from the hub that holds the water pump pulley, remove it and take off the drive belt. 5 Take off the four bolts that hold the water pump in place and take off the pump. 6 Wire brush the area where the new pump will be installed to remove any debris and old sealant. Finish cleaning with a rag. 7 Lubricate the new o-ring gasket with a thin layer of sealant on each side and place it into the correct position. 8 Install the pump onto the mounting surface and replace the bolts that hold it tight. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque of 89 inch/pounds or the torque the owner's manual recommends. 9 Replace the drive belt and the belt pulley. Replace the bolts for the pulley and tighten them to 18 feet/pounds, or torque as suggested in the owner's manual. Connect the hoses to the pump. Check all connections to make sure they are tight. Step by Step : 10 On the radiator bottom, close the drain valve. Funnel the old coolant back into the radiator, or replace it with a new 50/50 premixed coolant. Step by Step : 11 Re-connect the battery, start the engine and let it run while you inspect your new pump for proper operation and leaks. Tips & Warnings Some 2002 Ford Ranger engines may require you to also remove the fan shroud and the heater hose. Never open the radiator when it is still hot. This can cause serious injury. This pump is responsible for getting gasoline from the tank to the engine. Should the pump fail or start to fail, then the engine will first have trouble running before failing completely in turn. Replacing the fuel pump takes at least an hour, but does not require any special tools or equipment. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Jack Jack stands 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set Brass hammer Brass drift Flathead screwdriver Replacement fuel pump Step by Step : 1 Park the DeVille on a level surface and put the wheel chocks around the front wheels. Lift the rear of the Cadillac with the jack and put jack stands under the rear axle. 2 Place the jack under the gas tank. Unbolt the gas tank straps from the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the jack down until you can access the top of the tank. Crawl under the Cadillac and locate the gas tank, which is near the rear axle. Remove the hose clamps holding the fuel lines to the tank and the fuel filler neck to the tank using the flathead screwdriver. Unplug the wiring to the fuel pump with your hands. Then lower the tank the rest of the way and pull the tank out from under the Cadillac. 3 Turn the locking ring on the top of the fuel tank sending unit and fuel pump assembly using the brass drift and brass hammer. Lift the sending unit/fuel pump assembly straight up out of the tank. Locate the fuel pump, which is bottom of the tank. Pull the pump straight up out of the assembly and move it to the side. 4 Pull off the strainer from the fuel pump with your hands and install it on the replacement fuel pump. Install the replacement fuel pump onto the assembly with your hands. Install the replacement fuel pump into the tank and use the brass drift and brass hammer to install the locking ring and secure the assembly into the tank. 5 Lift the tank up into the chassis and reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connections to the tank using the flathead screwdriver. Bolt the tank mounting straps onto the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the Cadillac off of the jack stands using the jack. Tips & Warnings Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you're working on the fuel system of a vehicle. If you do, you risk causing a fire and damaging yourself and the vehicle.
